A farm business in South Australia’s Mid North has released a video to remind other family businesses of the importance of safety on the farm.

The video, featuring Stockport farming couple Mathew and Danika Koch, follows a 2020 incident involving a skid steer loader where the farm’s sole employee sustained fractures to his pelvis, ribs and toes at the A 2800-hectare sheep and cropping farm.

Koch Farming entered into an enforceable undertaking (EU) with SafeWork SA in March 2022 with an estimated minimum spend of $16,400.

It also spent more than $80,000 on rectifications outside of the EU.

An EU aims to improve WHS compliance and encourages communication with industry peers and the community generally about the consequences of unsafe work practices and the opportunities that putting in place safe work practices can bring.

Koch Farming has since registered with the Safe Ag Systems safety and training program.

Under the terms of the EU, it agreed to spend $13,000 on a work health and safety management system audit of the farm by a competent WHS Auditor.

It also agreed to produce a short video in conjunction with GrainGrowers outlining the incident to bring focus to farm safety.

The video was released last month and will become a valuable resource for the South Australian farming community.
