A workplace safety guide for hospitality managers is being made available to the broader industry for the first time.

The Managers Guide to WHS has been developed by the Hospitality Industry Work Health and Safety Association of South Australia and is an updated version of a previous guide published in 2013.

The new guide is broken down into four sections covering leadership and commitment, consultation and communication, hazard management and templates and checklists.

It aims to become a practical working document to help hospitality industry employers strengthen and improve their work health and safety practices. The guide is now publicly accessible on the SafeWork SA website.

The Hospitality Industry Work Health and Safety Association includes representatives from the Australian Hotel Association (SA), Clubs SA, Institute of Hospitality in Healthcare, United Workers Union and SafeWork SA.

The updated guide has an ‘Additional Support and Services’ listing contact details for SafeWork SA, ReturnToWorkSA, and hospitality industry group associations.

The previous guide was only provided in hard copies to Hospitality Industry Work Health and Safety Association members.

Hospitality is a very broad industry with risks and hazards ranging from industrial kitchens to service of alcohol and large-scale events such as the Adelaide Fringe.

Hospitality Industry Work Health and Safety Association Chair Owen Webb said the Manager’s Guide was developed to assist managers in the industry with their WHS needs.

‘We are acutely aware of how hands on and time poor hospitality managers are, so the guide tries to provide managers with access to the most relevant templates, policies and information in an easy-to-use format,’ he said.

‘It is imperative that employers meet their WHS legislative obligations and this guide will assist them on the right path to meeting those obligations.’
