Health and safety initiatives supporting young workers and women in the workplace can apply for up to $25,000 in grant funding through SafeWork SA’s 2023 Augusta Zadow Awards, which open this week.

The annual awards were established in recognition of the efforts of Augusta Zadow, who in 1895 became South Australia’s first female inspector of factories. She played a crucial role in securing better conditions for employees, particularly women and children.

South Australian businesses and individuals are invited to submit an application outlining their idea for research, educational program or solution that improves the health and safety of women or young people working in South Australia.

SafeWork SA Executive Director Glenn Farrell said the Augusta Zadow Award program had honoured the legacy of one of the state’s great workplace safety pioneer’s by improving health and safety for women and young workers for almost two decades.

‘These awards are a time-honoured part of SafeWork SA’s ongoing commitment to supporting workplace safety through practical outcomes and evidence-based research,’ he said.

‘We want to encourage people to think about doing safety differently in order to benefit the wider community.’

The 2023 SafeWork SA Augusta Zadow Awards
are now open.

Since 2005 SafeWork SA have been awarding
grants to the tune of a total

of $350,000 which has helped numerous
individuals, projects and initiatives get off the ground.

With the $20,000 that I won through the
Augusta Zadow Award,

it enabled me to actually get this project off the ground.

We couldn't have done this project without
the funding from the Augusta Zadow Awards.

There's absolutely no way I would have been

able to do that without that support and I think the fact that the process wasn't particularly arduous and with the support of the panel, it's made a lot of difference.

Pots of money like this that are specifically
for worker groups that might

be underrepresented in research are so important.

If you've got an idea and particularly if
you're a young person or a woman

and particularly if you're from agriculture,
I would say get in there and give it a go.

I'd highly recommend applying for
the Augusta Zadow Awards.

So I encourage all South Australians to put forward a nomination

for an initiative or a project that you would like to work on

that will see improvements in workplace health and safety.

Presented during National Safe Work Month in October, the awards support initiatives, research or further education that improve health and safety for women and young workers in South Australia.

The 2022 winners were:

  • Paige Cross from AgInnovate for her proposal to create a series of new employee induction workshops for young agriculture workers
  • Hayley Davies and Eva Jakob from Recovery Partners for their planned awareness campaign to raise awareness in the workplace of the burden carried by women suffering from endometriosis.

Each winner was granted $12,500 towards their project.

Since the Augusta Zadow Awards grants program launched in 2005, SafeWork SA has awarded 35 grants to fund safety initiatives benefiting businesses, workers and the community valued at more than $350,000.

Successful applicants must propose a project that will benefit women and young people by:

  • providing a solution to a work health and safety issue, and/or
  • significantly improving health and safety through research and further education.

Applications for the 2023 grants opened on 15 May and will remain open until Monday, 31 July 2023.

Successful applicants will be announced as part of National Safe Work Month events in October.
