Nurseries and garden centres

SafeWork SA is working with Nursery and Garden Industry SA and its members to support continual improvement in work health and safety practice within this industry.

SafeWork SA has provided information to members to assist in addressing common hazards and issues faced in nurseries and garden centres.

This information includes one easy-to-use work health and safety tool - Simple steps - which will help nursery and garden centres to self-assess and manage hazards.

Many work injuries are preventable and while the number of serious injuries in nurseries and garden centres is low, about half end in significant time off work. Taking the time to ensure that work is carried out safely is a sure way of nipping workplace injuries in the bud.

Common risks faced by nursery and garden centre workers are:

  • pushing and pulling heavy trolleys
  • lifting and carrying bags and plants
  • loading and unloading
  • using hand tools.

Together, Nursery and Garden Industry SA and SafeWork SA are helping to nurture safe and healthy workplaces.
