Teams from around Australia and New Zealand will put their safety and rescue skills to the test this month in the South Australian Mines Emergency Response Competition (SAMERC).

Eight teams will head to the Adelaide Hills to compete across 10 scenarios designed to test their skills and knowledge in the event they are called on to respond to a mine emergency.

Held at the CFS Training Centre, Brukunga, in the Adelaide Hills, it will be the closest to Adelaide the SAMERC event has been held. This will provide unprecedented access to the public wanting to see the rescue teams in action across the two days of competition on Thursday 23 October and Friday 24 October.

The past three events have been held at Roxby Downs, Whyalla and Carrapateena.

This year’s teams include Oceana Gold from New Zealand and two teams from New South Wales, Newmont Cadia and CSA Mine. South Australia will be represented by Kanmantoo Copper Mine, SIMEC Mining, and teams from BHP’s mines at Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill and Carrapateena.

Scenarios on show include firefighting, vertical rescue, road crash rescue, confined space rescue, search and rescue and industrial rescue.

SafeWork SA is a premium sponsor of the event along with BHP, Byrnecut, Sandvik, South Australian Chamber of Mines & Energy, Blackwoods, Fire and Safety Australia, MSA and ISH24.

The competition is being staged as part of National Safe Work Month activities.

The teams will be competing for the SAMERC Perpetual Trophy along with trophies awarded to the winners of each event along with Best Team Captain and a SAMERC Chairman’s Award for the team that best demonstrates the values of the competition.
