There are three types of asbestos licences:

  • An asbestos assessor licence allows the licence holder to carry out air monitoring during Class A or Class B removal work and to carry out a clearance inspections and issue a clearance certificates for Class A removal work
  • A Class A asbestos removal licence allows the licence holder to remove friable asbestos and non-friable asbestos and asbestos contaminated dust or debris (ACD)
  • A Class B asbestos removal licence allows the licence holder to remove more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos and ACD associated with the removal of more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos.

Guide for applicants

This licence enables the holder to remove any form of asbestos material.

Applicants must be familiar with the provisions of the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA) and Chapter 8 of the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012 (SA), relevant Codes of Practice and Australian Standards.

Licence holders must notify us before undertaking asbestos removal work.

For SafeWork SA to accept your application, the form must be completed correctly, and all supporting documentation must be included.

Asbestos removal licence - Class B

Guide for applicants

This licence enables the holder to remove only asbestos cement products (e.g. fibro) and other non-friable asbestos containing material (eg floor tiles).

Applicants must be familiar with the provisions of the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA) and Chapter 8 of the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012 (SA), relevant Codes of Practice and Australian Standards.

Where applicants intend to remove asbestos-backed vinyl floor coverings and other friable asbestos products they must hold a Class A asbestos removal licence.

Licence holders must notify us before undertaking asbestos removal work.

For SafeWork SA to accept your application, the form must be completed correctly, and all supporting documentation must be included.

Asbestos Removal Supervisor Nomination Form

Complete the Asbestos Removal Supervisor Nomination Form to:

  • Nominate a supervisor for a new Asbestos Removal Licence Application
  • Add a supervisor already authorised by SafeWork SA
  • Remove a supervisor
  • Change a supervisor's personal details
  • Upgrade a supervisor's  authorisation
  • Add a supervisor to a mutually recognised licence

A licence holder must advise SafeWork SA of the removal of a nominated supervisor within 14 days of the change. A supervisor is not an authorised supervisor in accordance with the WHS Regulations until SafeWork SA has approved the nomination.

Asbestos assessor licence

Guide for applicants

This licence enables the holder to conduct air monitoring at licensed asbestos removals and clear Class A asbestos removals for reoccupation.

Applicants must be familiar with the provisions of the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA) and Chapter 8 of the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012 (SA), relevant Codes of Practice and Australian Standards.

If applicants intend to count their own slides (to the membrane filter method) rather than use the services of a NATA laboratory, they must hold documented slide counting proficiency.

For SafeWork SA to accept your application, the form must be completed correctly, and all supporting documentation must be included.
