Shops across Adelaide can open at 9am on Sundays from this weekend following amendments to shop trading hours legislation.

The Shop Trading Hours (Extension of Hours) Amendment Act 2022 also locks in Boxing Day trading across Adelaide from 9am to 5pm and allows shops to trade until midnight on Black Friday (the fourth Thursday in November each year).

In addition, shops will be allowed to trade until midnight on up to three additional weekdays in the period between 11 December and 23 December. This year the three additional dates will be Thursday 15, Thursday 22 and Friday 23 December.

This festive season Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on Sundays, creating additional public holidays on Tuesday 27 December and Monday 2 January. Shops will be allowed to trade from 9am to 5pm on these days.

The state legislation was proclaimed to come into operation on 1 November.

Previously, shops across Adelaide were permitted to open on Sundays from 11am to 5pm. Only shops in the Adelaide CBD could open on Boxing Day, trading from 11am to 5pm. Large supermarkets will not be able to trade on Boxing Day.

However, businesses can still choose to open later than 9am or not at all on Sundays and Boxing Day if they wish. Workers can also refuse to work on Sundays and public holidays.

The changes aim to simplify trading laws by placing restrictions on the Ministerial powers of exemption and reducing red tape around the appointment of inspectors.

The Bill’s introduction in early September followed a three-week consultation period giving traders, staff and shoppers the chance to have a say on the draft Bill.
