Wednesday 28 April is World Day for Safety and Health at Work and Workers’ Memorial Day. This is a day to reflect on how we can all play a role in preventing work-related injuries and illness. It is also a day to remember those that have died from a work-related injury or illness.

National data shows that in 2019, 183 workers were fatally injured at work. While the number of work-related fatalities in Australia has been steadily decreasing over the last decade, any workplace death is tragic and unacceptable.

The International Workers’ Memorial Day service will be held at Adelaide’s Pilgrim Uniting Church on Wednesday morning to commemorate lives lost to work-related death.

The theme for Workers’ Memorial Day 2021 is ‘Health and Safety is a fundamental workers’ right’.

SafeWork SA Executive Director, Martyn Campbell said that everyone deserves to return home safely at the end of every day and the theme for 2021 highlights this.

“I cannot stress enough the importance for everyone to keep health and safety in the workplace as a priority”.

The non-denominational service will be held at 10am at the Pilgrim Uniting Church, 12 Flinders Street, Adelaide, and is hosted by VOID (Voice of Industrial Death). The service will feature a candle-lighting ceremony and the symbolic release of doves.

Anyone affected by a work-related death or significant trauma is welcome to attend the service.
