Unions are bodies that represent the interests of workers in particular industries or occupations. Unions play an important role in the workplace and society in general.
Unions advocate for workers’ rights and aim to foster a fair and safe working environment in South Australia.
They also advocate for the well-being of workers by raising awareness about potential hazards and promoting best practices in work health and safety.
Unions can advise on and resolve workplace issues by being a voice for workers, by representing workers within consultation processes, and by acting as a bargaining representative during bargaining negotiations.
Other responsibilities of unions include ensuring employers are meeting their minimum obligations and looking into suspected breaches of:
- workplace laws
- discrimination laws
- workplace health and safety laws.
Union Entry Permit Holders may enter workplaces to:
- inquire into suspected contraventions of the WHS Act
- consult and advise workers.
Together with employer organisations, unions are represented on the SafeWork SA Advisory Committee.
The SafeWork SA Advisory Committee provides advice to SafeWork SA and the Minister and creates a high-level forum for stakeholder consultation, work health and safety matters and strategic direction.
