WHS Regulations specify the exposure standards for noise in relation to a worker are:
- 85dB(A) aggregated over 8 hrs (total continuous noise averaged over 8 hours).
- 140 dB(C) peak noise exposure at any one time during the day.
The recommended target in ear exposure level for workers is 80dB(A).
The relationship between noise level and exposure time is measured in a logarithmic scale – where every 3dB(A) increase in noise, doubles the risk of exposure to hearing loss.
There are no exposure limits which relate to noise levels in office workplace settings, however, ideally noise levels should be kept below:
- 50 dB(A) if the work requires high concentration or effortless conversation
- 70 dB(A) if the work is routine, fast-paced and demands attentiveness, or if it is important to carry on conversations.
